Recently, the Calder team along with Team Restoration completed the first project in Home Repair Services of Kent County‘s Community Repair Days.
Calder, Home Repair Services, and Team Restoration worked together to coordinate many schedules, determine repairs, and source materials to complete a critical repair for the deck of a local Vietnam Veteran.
Home Repair Services of Kent County is a non-profit organization local to Calder Capital’s headquarters. Their mission is to strengthen vulnerable Kent County homeowners because strong homeowners build strong communities. They do this by offering discounted repair services, learning opportunities, and home inspections.
The organization is near and dear to the hearts of many Calder staff, including Scott Nicholson who introduced the organization to Calder Capital. Scott was an HRS board member for 6 years and regularly brings staff and clients to Home Repair Services Lunch and Learn Tours.
On June 2nd, the team arrived at 8 am for the first shift. The morning team began stripping rotted wood off of the deck, railings, and steps. The team added joist brackets to the beams for added support. Once, the old wood removal was complete, the team’s focus shifted to measuring new wood boards to replace the decking.
Around noon, Calder’s second shift arrived ready to work. Shortly after, Joel Ruiter, Steven Nicolet, and Angel Smith from Home Repair Services stopped by the worksite to provide pizza, water, and T-shirts!
With their thirst quenched and bellies full, the team reshifted focus to finishing the deck. Throughout the afternoon, they worked on measuring, cutting, and adding new deck boards.
The team finished the deck project around 4:30 pm. We are proud of all the team members who took a break from their busy schedules to come to help someone in our local community despite the 90+ degree heat.

They shared their favorite moments from working on the deck and engaging in conversation with the homeowner. The homeowner closely observed our repair process, and his excitement was evident. His gratitude and kindness touched us deeply, and we feel immensely fortunate to have had the opportunity to make a positive impact in his life.”
We extend our deepest gratitude to Mark Zimmer from Team Restoration, who played an invaluable role as the lead contractor on this project. Mark’s dedication was instrumental in assessing the extent of the damage prior to the repair day. Throughout the entire deck project, he guided the team and remained present, ensuring its successful completion. Without his coordination, expertise, and the collective efforts of his team, this project would not have been possible.
