What to Expect When You Apply to Calder Capital
We know applying for a job can feel uncertain, so we’ve designed our process to be clear, efficient, and respectful of your time.
Our goal is simple: get to know how you think, how you work, and whether Calder is the right fit for you, just as much as you’re deciding if we’re the right fit for you.
Most hiring processes take about 3–5 weeks, depending on the role.

Step 1: Submit Your Application
Once you apply, our team will take the time to carefully review your background, experience, and overall fit for the role. We’re not just checking boxes; we’re looking to understand your story, your strengths, and what you could bring to the team.
If your experience aligns with what we’re looking for, we’ll reach out to guide you through the next steps. We pride ourselves on responding to every candidate, no matter what the decision is. Please be sure to keep an eye out for an email response from us within 2-3 business days.
Step 2: Case Study
For many roles, we’ll ask you to complete a short take-home case study. This is designed to reflect the type of work you might encounter at Calder, so we can better understand how you think and approach real situations.
We’re not expecting perfection, or for you to spend hours on this. The goal is to get a clear sense of your thought process, not to create extra work. Most candidates can complete this within a reasonable amount of time.
Through this step, we’re looking to understand:
- How you approach real-world situations
- Your attention to detail
- How you communicate your thinking
We typically ask that you return the case study within about a week, but we understand that schedules vary. If you need more time, just let us know. We’re happy to be flexible.
Step 3: Intro Call (30 Minutes)
If your case study looks good, you’ll be invited to a 30-minute phone or virtual conversation with our HR team.
This is a chance for us to get to know you beyond your resume, your experience, what you’re looking for, and what’s important to you in your next role. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a better feel for Calder and the position.
We aim to keep this conversation relaxed and straightforward. There’s no need to overprepare or even be on camera; we’re simply looking to have a genuine discussion.
No matter the outcome, we will always follow up. We greatly respect the time and effort you’ve put into the process, and every candidate will receive a clear response.
Step 4: Team Interviews
Next, you’ll meet with our hiring managers and members of the team. This stage is typically held in person, at our Grand Rapids, Michigan office, so you can get a better feel for our environment and how we work day-to-day.
Depending on the role and department, you may meet with a few different people. This isn’t meant to add pressure, it’s simply to make sure there’s a strong mutual fit from all perspectives and to give you the chance to hear directly from the team you’d be working with.
During these conversations, we’ll talk through:
- Your experience and skillset
- How you approach challenges
- What it’s like to work at Calder
We keep things conversational, no trick questions. We’re interested in real examples, how you think through situations, and making sure this is the right fit for both you and our team.
Step 5: Decision
After your interviews, our team will take the time to thoughtfully review everything and make a decision.
No matter the outcome, you will hear from us. We believe strongly in respecting the time and effort you’ve invested throughout the process, and we don’t leave candidates wondering where they stand.
If it’s a strong mutual fit, we’ll reach out to extend an offer and walk you through the next steps.
If it’s not the right fit, we’ll follow up promptly to let you know.
Our goal is to make this final step clear, timely, and respectful, just as the rest of the process should be.
How to Prepare
We want you to feel confident going into the process and able to show your best. A few simple ways to prepare:
Take some time to get to know us
Understanding what Calder Capital does and the type of work we’re involved in will help you connect your experience to the role and have more meaningful conversations with our team.
Think through your experiences
Come prepared with a few real examples, times you’ve solved problems, worked through challenges, collaborated with others, or delivered results. We care more about how you think and what you’ve learned than having “perfect” answers.
Be yourself
We’re not looking for rehearsed responses. We’re looking for genuine people who take ownership, think critically, and are excited about what they do.
Come with questions
Interviews are a two-way conversation. We encourage you to ask questions about the role, the team, and what it’s really like to work at Calder.
Our Commitment to You
We aim to make your experience with us as positive and straightforward as possible.
Clear
You’ll always know where you are in the process and what comes next.
